Purple and deep red colors coat the glass. Typical smells of Charbono: blueberries, lavender, tar with a background layer of sweet oak.

The Story
Charbono is an incredibly rare grape. There are less than 100 acres in North America and of these, the 30 or so acres grown in Calistoga are acknowledged to consistently produce the richest, most intense Charbono. The grape was originally imported from France sometime during the late 1800’s, erroneously as Barberra and was later properly identified as Charbono (or Bonarda in South America). Ours comes from Calistoga’s Frediani vines ranging to approximately 80 years old. We have been producing Charbono under our OnThEdge label since 2001.

Vineyard
Frediani Vineyard, Silverado Trail Block. Soils transition from Pleasant gravel to Bale gravelly-loam.

Harvest Information
Charbono is often the last grape harvested at Frediani Vineyard and is usually not picked until after the first rainfall. Our V-09 was picked the morning of October 12th at a typical Charbono sugar of 23.2%. After field sorting we destemmed into two small open top fermenters, punched down and pumped over aggressively. Prior to bottling we blended in a bit of Frediani Petite Sirah.

Barrel Program
25% new American Oak barrels (Northern Minnesota); 75% once used French and Hungarian Oak barrels
