Coach's Corner Archive

Coach's Corner Archive

December 18, 2009

There is nothing more rewarding than getting to visit with both the people who offer our wines and consumers and fans of Vermeil Wines.  By the time the afternoon was over the West Chester, PA Premium Store sold 23 cases of Vermeil and OnThEdge wines!  The store staff and support team from the PLCB were very pleasant, professional and accommodating, and the holiday spirit filled the room.  I’m looking forward to doing a visit to another area store in the near future.  Keep an eye out here in the Coach’s Corner for details.

December 16, 2009

Vermeil Wines partner/investor Edmond Walters of eMoney Advisors arranged for us to pour our wines at a pre-holiday event hosted by Steve Cordasco of RBC Wealth Management at the “Top of the Tower” at One Logan Square.  Kudos to the chef for great food pairings and the evening was a tremendous success.  Steve and his team were incredibly cordial and we left the night having formed many new friendships.

Here's your invitation to an exciting event coming on December 18th in PA.  Hope to see you there!

There was a great turnout on December 1st for the 11th annual banquet held in loving memory or Otho Davis, former Eagles Athletic Trainer, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame member, and five time recipient of the National Athletic Trainers Association's prestigious "Professional Trainer of the Year" award.  Former Eagles stars and role players alike were in attendance, and every one hat their own special stories about Otho.

One of the driving forces behind the Foundation is Jim Solano, longtime Philadelphia-based sports agent and friend. Jim surprised me with having a bottle of our 2003 Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon on hand to toast Otho's memory and to celebrate the continued good works his scholarship foundation provides to aspiring Athletic Trainers. It was a fitting tribute to a dearly missed colleague and, if justice prevails, future NFL Hall of Fame member.

On November 9th I had the pleasure of visiting with Todd Collins, Redskins quarterback and one of my former players in Kansas City. Todd has become a serious wine appreciator and has a great palate so, when I offered him an opportunity to become a member of our ownership team at Vermeil Wines, he jumped at the chance.

The location for our get-together was arranged by Harrison Berstein, a strength coach with the Redskins who is very plugged into the DC area restaurant scene. He chose BlackSalt Restaurant, and what a GREAT choice!

The owner of BlackSalt is a gregarious former Texan, Jeff Black, and he was on hand to personally host the informal event. An array of amazing hors d’oeuvres and small plates were the accompaniment to our Vermeil Wines offerings, including crab cakes that were among the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Topping it off was a superb tray of distinctive cheeses that were both subtle and complex. It was an experience that I’m looking forward to repeating, and Jeff enjoyed the wines so much that he agreed to host a wine dinner in the coming months.

I’m looking forward to reporting back from BlackSalt, and highly recommend it to anyone who lives in or happens to be visiting the Washington, DC area. BlackSalt Restaurant is located at: 4883 MacArthur Blvd., Washington, DC 20007 Phone: (202) 342-9101

A pleasant bonus to our evening at BlackSalt was an impromptu visit to their neighbor, Addy Bassin’s MacArthur Beverages. Long regarded as a leader in the retail wine business, MacArthur Beverages' “guru” of domestic wines is Andy Creemer and we had the opportunity to visit with Andy and pour our wines for him. Andy was sufficiently impressed to invite us to participate in MacArthur’s annual California Barrel Tasting on April 17, 2010. While it will be first for us, this will be their 25th annual barrel tasting, so we’re honored to be included in this prestigious event.

From Coaching to Wine, Vintage Vermeil by Bob Gretz

A confession: for five years, I hosted the Dick Vermeil Show every Monday night, sometimes Tuesday nights, after Chiefs games. That would be 81 shows. For 80 of those shows, which were done in the broadcast booth at Arrowhead Stadium, we had a bottle of wine on site. Almost always it was a red wine, because that was my preference; Vermeil’s too. There were usually five to six people there as part of the show, so the bottle would go quickly.

The Coach would have about half a glass. He had been at work since 5 a.m. and was planning to be working until about midnight; Mondays are always a very busy day in the NFL. Anything more than a swallow or two would have Vermeil nodding off in his meeting with the coaches.

After his last game as the Chiefs head coach, the last Dick Vermeil Show featured a wine that he brought: one of his own Jean Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignons. As the show went on, the Coach talked about getting more involved in the wine business, going back to his roots.

Vermeil has done that with the creation of the Vermeil Wines Group. Along with a group of partners that includes Carl Peterson and a pair of his former quarterbacks in Trent Green and Todd Collins, Vermeil Wines opened a tasting room in Calistoga, California this summer and production of wines under Vermeil’s name has grown and will get bigger in the future.

Calistoga is where Vermeil was born and where he grew up. It’s smack in the middle of the Napa Valley and the business of wine has fueled the area economy for years. As the offspring of a family with Italian blood on one side and French blood on the other, wine was always part of Vermeil’s life. They didn’t put it in his baby bottle, but he wasn’t but eight or nine before the milk at the dinner table was replaced by a watered down glass of vino.

“Growing up, even as a child we would have wine at the dinner table,” Vermeil said. “My father used to like to tell the story of how he got sent home from elementary school because he had wine in his thermos. My grandfather was deeply offended because wine was a very big part of our culture. I think I started having a glass of wine at dinner regularly when I was 12 years old. Wine was a part of virtually every meal. You would always be tasting different vintages, even if it was a bit watered down for us.”

Vermeil’s great grandfather on his mother’s side came to San Francisco from Lucca, a town in Tuscany, Italy. Garibaldi Iaccheri was a successful businessman and bought a plot of land in Calistoga because it looked like his homeland. His daughter married Albert Vermeil, the coach’s grandfather, who made wine as a hobby.
“My brother and I would help our grandfather with some of the more manual labor,” said Vermeil. “We’d lift the crates of grapes out of the truck and sometimes I would even get to twist the handle and press the grapes.”

Many years later, Vermeil is involved in making wine like his grandfather. He hooked up years ago with winemaker Paul Smith, who spent 17 years working with the famed Robert Mondavi Winery and is now a partner in Vermeil Wines. “I told Paul, ‘You make the wine, we’ll get the grapes and we’ll make 200-300 cases a year’,” Vermeil said. “‘I’ll pay the expenses and maybe l can help with the marketing,’ because by that time my name was known in coaching.”

Smith’s On the Edge Winery began producing 175 cases of the Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet in 1999. A few years ago, the Jean Vermeil Cabernet started getting noticed by wine big shots. A long-time wine critic and publisher of the Wine Advocate Robert Parker gave the cab a score of 93 for the 2002 version. Any wine graded higher than 90 is considered a top-flight wine. “This is the personal wine project of the Super Bowl-winning, renowned NFL head coach, Dick Vermeil,” wrote Parker. “His initial dive into the wine world is impressive. It goes against the rule-of-thumb that celebrities rarely achieve anything special in the world of wine.”

Vermeil’s retirement from coaching and the success of the wine has led to expanded production and the creation of the Vermeil Wine Group. They hope to expand production to 10,000 cases, and if the wine starts to sell, there may one day be a Vermeil winery for production. As of now, the tasting room opened this summer right in Calistoga and has been a big hit.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Vermeil said. “I don’t claim to really know much about making wine, other than I know it’s hard work. I’m involved with some very talented people. It’s not unlike being a head coach and having a great staff of assistants.” In fact, he’s dubbed the winery’s GM and Director of Sales Tom Ward his offensive coordinator, as they try to increase the distribution of Vermeil Wines around the country.

Vermeil held a wine dinner several weeks ago in Kansas City, and many of his former players were there, including the likes of limited partner Trent Green, Priest Holmes and even Larry Johnson. Among the wines served was the Vermeil Library Selection 2003 Zinfandel which was very good. If you like a red wine with a big, hardy taste, this peppery Zin is a classic. A major thumbs up from this taster on that vino. The other wines offered at this dinner – Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – were also good wines, especially paired with the right foods. Three-cheese ravioli with a morel mushroom sauce was very good with the Vermeil Cabernet Franc.

These are solid wines, better than most and in some cases very good. As the project goes forward, the wines should only get better. The price range is $20 to $50 which is on the high side, but that is fairly common with small output wineries. Again, hopefully more production will bring some lower prices, but Vermeil Wines is getting its grapes from many of the most prestigious vineyards in the Napa Valley (Frediani) and that’s not inexpensive.

There are some retail outlets in the Kansas City area that have Vermeil Wines. They are distributed in Missouri by Major Brands and in Kansas by Standard Beverage. Wine can also be ordered here.

October 14, 2009

A storied St. Louis area country club founded in the 1920’s and host of the 1948 National PGA Championship won by Ben Hogan, Norwood Hills Country Club hosted a wine dinner featuring Vermeil Wines on October 13th, just a matter of days after our Plaza III dinner. The members were as charming as the venue, and the reception to the wines very positive.

October 13, 2009

Our Missouri wholesale distributor, Major Brands, conducted their annual pre-holiday trade tasting for top retail and restaurant accounts in October and we were in town and able to attend. The turnout was amazing and at times people were three deep to have the opportunity to taste our wines. It was a great “introduction” to the St. Louis marketplace and we look forward to visiting with these buyers one-on-one, as we did with the good folks at Flemings Steakhouse, The Cheese Place, and other locations now carrying Vermeil Wines.

October 8, 2009

It brought back a flood of good memories being at Plaza III, one of America’s truly great steakhouses. Former NFL Pro-Bowl quarterback and Vermeil Wines partner Trent Green highlighted a long list of current and former Chiefs players who attended and the feedback from filled-to-capacity room was outstanding.

As usual, owner Nabil Haddad and his entire team outdid themselves in matching up our wines with a distinctive menu that was capped off by a Filet Mignon topped with a decadent Lobster Béarnaise that was paired with our acclaimed Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon.

Here is the menu:

First Course
Maryland Crab Cakes with Chili Aioli on Field Greens
with Citrus Vinaigrette
Vermeil Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Second Course
A pair of Grilled Lamb Chops with Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Vermeil Library Selection Zinfandel 2003

Third Course
Three Cheese Ravioli with a Morel Mushroom Cream Sauce

Vermeil Library Selection Cabernet Franc 2002

Fourth Course

We look forward as always to our next visit to Plaza III Steakhouse.

Last night was the East Coast Unveiling of Vermeil Wines with an exclusive Wine Dinner at the elegant Great Bay Country Club in Somers Point, NJ.  What a beautiful event!  The emcee for the evening was my friend Pat Croce (former owner of the Philadelphia 76ers).  We hosted more than 250 guests.  The menu included:

  • Grilled lime cilantro ahi tuna paired with our refreshing Sauvignon Blanc
  • Chicken Valdostano with our bold Zinfandel
  • Lamb chops in a balsamic reduction with our elegant Cabernet Franc
  • Filet Mignon in my special marinade paired with our fantastic Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet Sauvignon.  By the way, you can get the marniade recipe in our Spring 2009 newsletter.

We are already booking Wine Dinners in other parts of the country.  Keep watching our website for dates in your area!

September 21, 2009

Carol and I had a wonderful time for the past two weeks in Calistoga, but once again we misjudged when the bulk of our crush would take place.  Last year we went out earlier and the crush ended up being almost over.  This year we decided to go out earlier, and as you guessed, the harvest started later.  Just got off the phone with Paul Smith, and he’s now going full bore!  The NFL was sure easier to organize, because all dates are written in stone.  Obviously, Mother Nature isn’t involved with the NFL.  Regardless though, we had a productive time.

The September 10th grand opening of our remodeled tasting room went very well.  All partners were present except for John Scarpa and our two NFL quarterbacks Trent Green and Todd Collins.

We are all very proud of the end product!  I did get back to drive a tractor in the fabulous vineyards while our pickers did all the work.  The eleven workers picked four tons of Zinfandel in sixty-five minutes.  A regulation game with a five minute overtime.  I sure do respect the work ethic of these wonderful people.

Following the Syrah picking, Carol and I were able to spend the rest of the day with Paul Smith and Michael Rone processing the grapes.  Real fun stuff.  You get to taste the product as a juice at its earliest stage of development.  Paul was the head coach. Carol, Michael and myself amounted to his coaching staff.  A great way to spend a day in the Napa Valley.  Next year we hope to do a better job of aligning ourselves with Mother Nature’s game plan and spend a full fourteen days going through the process.

On another note, under the supervision of Don Luvisi, a limited partner in VWG, we formed a ravioli team making over 1,500 raviolis in two nights.  The third night of the ravioli adventure was the best – fourteen of us ate a lot of them.  Needless to say, we consumed some very good Vermeil Wines.  What a great combination.

Well, thanks for checking in.  The NFL season is in full swing, and I’m enjoying four TV games a week, as I sip on some of our top of the line products.
