The Winery Team

“The basic principles it takes to win will never change; you surround yourself with good people, and work hard, and be unselfish and care, and don’t be embarrassed to say I love you and I appreciate it because, guys, if you say it someone else will say it back to you.”
Dick Vermeil

Dick Vermeil — Calistoga native and known to many simply as Coach — built his life around two passions: football and wine.

He pursued football first, beginning as a college assistant and going on to a decades-long career defined by relentless work ethic and inspirational leadership.

He led UCLA to a Rose Bowl victory over undefeated Ohio State in 1975, brought the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1980, and delivered a dramatic turnaround and Super Bowl XXXIV victory with the St. Louis Rams in 2000. He later coached the Kansas City Chiefs, leading them to the AFC West Championship in 2003.

After retiring from coaching in 2005, Coach returned to his other lifelong passion — winemaking — beginning the next chapter of the Vermeil family’s Napa Valley story.

Thomas Rivers Brown

Consulting Winemaker

One of the most sought after winemakers in the Napa Valley today, Thomas is known for his non-interventionalist winemaking style that allows the fruit to speak for itself.

A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Thomas began his career in the Napa Valley in 1997.

Self-taught, Thomas began making wine in 1999 and soon after made history by becoming the youngest winemaker to score two perfect, 100-point scores from Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate.

As our consulting winemaker, Thomas guides the direction of the Vermeil Wines portfolio and collaborates with Tim on everything from vineyard oversight, to harvest, to bottling.

Originally from Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Tim Beranek now lives in Sebastopol, California with his wife and two sons.

Tim began his wine career in 2010 as an intern at Kosta Browne Winery before joining world-renowned consulting winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown at Outpost Winery in 2011. Rising to Assistant Winemaker, he helped build and run their extensive production program while earning his Wine Certificate from UC Davis.

As the first employee at Mending Wall, Tim helped construct the winery and oversaw operations from 2014–2023, serving as winemaker from 2019–2023. In early 2023 he became Director of Winemaking at Thomas Rivers Brown Winemaking LLC and joined the team at Vermeil Wines.

Tim brings deep experience, a passion for the craft of winemaking, and a commitment to continuing the Vermeil Wines legacy.
